Modern Foreign Languages

Intent Statement

We are committed to broadening pupils’ understanding of the world and developing long life, strong linguistic and transferable skills. Languages are for life. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world. Pupils learn to appreciate different cultures, countries, communities, and people.
Our MFL curriculum is planned and sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and towards building competent future linguists. Our Learning Journeys have been developed and sequenced based around the National Curriculum and our relevant examination board guidelines. This involves a broad program of study at KS3 which is further expanded into a dynamic and engaging KS4 curriculum.
The department’s vision is to continually improve standards through an engaging and challenging curriculum. Competency in a foreign language unlocks abilities, which enhance the employability skills of our pupils. We aim to promote cultural awareness and develop our pupils into global citizens.

We aspire to develop our students through ambitious and modern lessons which are rich in knowledge and skills, develops self-efficiency and promotes diversity and tolerance of other cultures.
We pride ourselves in the composing and delivering of engaging lessons that allow all pupils to make at least good progress. Within the MFL classroom, we emphasise the importance of making mistakes, and where pupils learn, is in deciding how they move on from these mistakes and how our learning journeys are adjusted to accommodate for this.

Students should develop a competency that is deep in the four skill areas of listening, reading, speaking, and writing – based on a sound foundation of vocabulary, core grammar and phonics.
We promote pupils’ growth in confidence speaking in a modern foreign language through repeated knowledge and recall strategies. Our teachers use SEN-friendly strategies such as the use of engaging kinaesthetic activities as well as visual and auditory learning styles. The teaching style is adjusted to reflect the needs of individual students as highlighted in their whole school Pupil Passports.

We strive to incorporate the Catholic Ethos and Core Values of our school into all lessons seeking to develop all our pupils into fulfilling their potential in their chosen language. At the same time, we endeavour to impart our own love of language learning so that every lesson from first words to their final exams is a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
