A group of pupils were recently able to gain an insight into what college life is like when they took part in Taster Days organised by Xaverian College and Loreto College in Manchester. This provided them with the opportunity to learn more about the colleges and the courses offered there.
The Taster Days were aimed at Year 10 pupils who are considering their options after finishing school. The pupils were able to discover more about the courses which are available at the colleges and learn about the skills and qualifications they would need to secure a place on these courses.
The pupils looked at the range of subjects available including science, art and humanities and were able to get involved with some hands-on activities.
“Taster days are designed to provide the pupils with a better idea of what college is really like, the different types of subjects that can be studied, the buildings, the atmosphere and information about the opportunities available to them in the future.,” commented Mr Mike Whiteside, Assistant Headteacher at Saint Paul’s. “Our pupils really benefitted from the time spent at Xaverian College and Loreto College and they had plenty of thoughts to take away.”
Mr Whiteside added “As well as talking to the lecturers, they also met several college students who were keen to share their enthusiasm and passion for their subjects with our pupils and were happy to answer questions about their own college life in a very friendly way.”
“Events such as these offer our pupils an excellent introduction to the sixth form teaching and learning environment as well as the diverse range of courses that are on offer,” explained Head Teacher, Mrs Fiona Minshall. “We hope that this will inspire the youngsters to invest extra effort in their learning and give them some ideas about the opportunities which would then be open to them once they leave Saint Paul’s.”
