Key Stage 3
The Faculty delivers the core KS3 English programme in line with the renewed framework prescribed by the DFE. In 2010, the Faculty refreshed and updated its schemes of work for Years 7-9 through investment in an interactive model produced by Hodder Education that fully meets the requirements of theframework.
Key Stage 4
Year 10 and 11 are following the new AQA curriculum (English: 7705, English Language: 4700) that has a 3- way option route for Year 11: English, English Language and English Literature (the latter being a dual award.) It is a two -year modular course. All of Year 10 complete a dual award course.
60% of the English course is controlled assessment.
One terminal exam constitutes 60% of the pupils’ final marks.
The English Unit 1 exam is sat at the end of Year 11.
5 controlled assessment marks are banked at the end of the two-year programme. Therefore, final grades are only available at the end of the two years. Pupils also complete 3 formally assessed speaking and listening tasks.
65% of the Literature course is examination. 35% is controlled assessment.
The Faculty also offers GCSE Media Studies in Year 11. 40% of the course is coursework and 60% examination.
Pupils are offered opportunities throughout Year 7 to 11 to become involved in extra-curricular activities such as: Reading Club, trips to London to visit “The Harry Potter Museum”, theatre trips and writing workshops at the John Ryland Library. Also all pupils are encouraged to write for the faculty Anthology each year and to enter writing competitions.
