Healthy Start to the Day at Saint Paul’s
Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe recently extended their breakfast club provision for their pupils. The club is part of the Saint Paul’s healthy eating initiative, which aims to emphasise the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise to its pupils. The school believes that the Breakfast club meets a variety of important needs: it meets children’s health needs by providing a balanced meal at the beginning of the day, it meets educational needs in terms of ensuring children start the school day on time, feeling well-nourished and settled and at the same time it meets the needs of children and their families through the provision of a safe, supervised environment before school starts.
“Research has shown that a successful breakfast club can have a positive impact on attendance and improve concentration levels,” explained Mrs Joanne Walters, Head of Food Technology at Saint Paul’s. “They can see at the club how healthy foods can be used to make enjoyable meals and snacks.” Mrs Walters added “The Breakfast Club also helps to develop healthy eating habits in childhood which, it is now widely accepted, positively influence adult eating patterns. "A good healthy breakfast provides the best possible start to the day!”
“The club is proving popular with our pupils,” commented Head Teacher, Mrs Fiona Minshall. “Such provision helps busy parents juggle their roles and provides a safe, secure and stable environment for their children. We are delighted with the enthusiasm which our pupils have shown.” “It also has a positive impact on the children’s manners, social skills, attendance, concentration, motivation and classroom performance,” added Mrs Minshall.
As part of our healthy eating initiative, we have recently extended the breakfast club provision for our pupils.
The breakfast club operates between 8.00 and 8.30 am. After a nutritious breakfast, the children enjoy quiet activities until it is time for them to be escorted to School in plenty of time for one of the pre-school co-curricular clubs or registration.
What children eat is an important part of their learning experience; health and progress stem from their eating habits which are established in their formative years at school.
We believe we have a responsibility to assist with the education process through the provision of healthy, wholesome and enjoyable foods – which also meet the ethnic and where possible the dietary requirements of pupils. Children who have a balanced meal at lunchtime can concentrate better and are more receptive during afternoon lessons. Also sitting down and eating a meal together helps children develop social and interpersonal skills.
We focus on continual improvement to ensure that they enjoy their lunchtime meal as well as providing value for the price of the meal
Active, growing children and young people require plenty of wholesome food and regular meals. At Saint Paul’s, we believe that we can offer something that will satisfy everyone.
Your child is able to choose from the following:
Main Meal - popular and traditional dishes including; fish dishes, curry with rice and homemade pizza. A vegetarian option is always available.
Pasta - from pasta bows and twirls to spaghetti or rice, served with a variety of sauces
Sandwiches - a range of bread rolls and wraps with a choice of fillings
Jacket Potatoes - with a choice of hot and cold fillings
