The award winning author, Martin Griffin aka Fletcher Moss, recently delivered a creative writing workshop to students at Saint Paul’s. He spoke to a group of Year 10 students about his writing, his style and the inspiration for his ideas.
Martin Griffin, who worked as a deputy head teacher at a school in Greater Manchester, won the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition 2012 with his swashbuckling novel The Poison Boy under the name Fletcher Moss. He is also the author of the novel Lifers.
In The Poison Boy, Dalton Fly, a lowly food taster to the rich, has a lucky escape after drinking laced wine. But his mate is less fortunate, and Dalton wants answers. Who murdered his friend, and what were they really after? With the help of aristocratic girl Scarlet Dropmore, whose life he unwittingly saved, he sets out to rescue his city from the poisoners within.Lifers is an atmospheric noir thriller set in future Manchester; it is packed full of high-octane adventure and tension.
Mrs Irena Savova, Librarian, said: “Martin Griffin’s tips for our aspiring writers were clear, direct and inspiring. He told the students to think through the plot, plan the story and then make sure you finish it. He told them to write fearlessly until the story is finished and then ask someone you trust to give you honest, insightful feedback. It is then important to act on this feedback and change your writing if necessary.”
Mr Jamie Sharrock, English teacher, said: “Martin was able to share ideas and give tips on how they could improve their writing. His visit has inspired our students to want to read, write, and learn more about the process of writing.”
“It was a pleasure to welcome Martin Griffin to the school for what was a fascinating and inspiring session. I was delighted by the interest shown by our students about his writing,” commented Mr Alex Hren, Head Teacher.
