Saint Paul’s teachers transformed into ‘Masked Readers’ to celebrate the joy of reading…
Staff at Saint Paul’s took inspiration from hit TV show The Masked Singer with a mystery reading event when staff donned a range of mysterious disguises to celebrate reading for pleasure.
The popular Saturday night show sees celebrities dress up in colourful costumes before taking to the stage to sing. The panel then guess who is behind the mask based on several clues. Staff at Saint Paul’s adapted the concept and were dressed in disguises while reading to the pupils online. The pupils then had to guess which teacher had been reading.
The staff were very creative with some their disguises, including donning retro style wigs and covering their faces with a range of masks.
“We like to remind students and staff of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives,” explained Mrs Irena Savova, Librarian. “We want students to make reading a regular part of their routine and help them to develop a life-long love of reading. It is very important to instil in young people a need and desire to read.”
“We are enjoying promoting reading across the school and seeing the benefits and pleasures of this,” explained Mr Jamie Sharrock, English teacher. “We know that students who read, gain a greater understanding of the world in which they live, they learn to appreciate how writers use language for effect and they extend their repertoire of vocabulary.”
Mr Alex Hren, Head Teacher, said “The more students read, and the more challenging their reading is, the more successful they will become in all subject areas and ultimately in life. This has been well researched over the years.”
