Award winning author, Jack Nicholls, recently delivered a comedy writing workshop to students at Saint Paul’s. He spoke to a group of Year 7 students about his writing and the inspiration for his ideas.
Jack Nicholls is an award-winning writer of poetry, plays and fiction. His debut poetry pamphlet Meat Songs was praised for “its surrealism, its dark comedy and its pitch-perfect sense of style”. His poems have been widely published including The Best New British and Irish Poets 2017 and The Poetry Review.
His debut full length play Harsh Noise Wall, “a play about limbs, brains and every member of The Fall”, was read at the Court and Northern Stage.
He also produces and hosts the experimental cabaret FLIM NITE and makes comedy with the sketch group Beach Hunks.
“It was a pleasure to have Jack Nicholls visit the school,” said Mrs Irena Savova, Librarian. “Jack’s workshop was extremely engaging, he is very keen to encourage children – particularly reluctant boys – to read a wide range of fiction. Jack was very funny and imaginative and so really appealed to the Year 7 boys.”
“The pupils really enjoyed their time with the author, Jack Nicholls, and asked some very interesting and thought provoking questions,” said Mr Nathan Mallon, English teacher. “I am now looking forward to seeing how they transfer this learning into their creative writing!”
“I was delighted by the interest shown by our pupil’s about Jack’s writing. The visit has inspired our pupils to want to read, write, and learn more about the process of writing,” commented Mr Alex Hren, Head Teacher. “The experience of having an author visit the school is one of the valuable gifts we can offer our pupils. It brings to life the magic of books and the joy of reading in a very special way.”
