To celebrate the European Day of Language, students at Saint Paul’s will take part in a variety of activities. A treasure hunt for Year 7, greetings in a variety of different languages to welcome them to their classes throughout the week, a variety of different foods in the canteen and prayers in different languages to celebrate our EAL students.
Mrs McCarron, Head of Modern Languages explained: “There is a rich and diverse culture behind all the languages on which we focused, we want to celebrate these cultures and show everyone across the school how important languages are and what fun can be had learning them. As a school, we recognise the value of languages and intercultural relationships and we want to encourage our pupils to be able to use more than one language.”
The Council of Europe declared a European Day of Languages to be celebrated on 26th September each year. The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are:
Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learnt in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding;
Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, for professional needs, for purposes of mobility or for pleasure and exchanges.
