Saint Paul’s Cooking Club: Confidence, Skills, and Sustainability

Students at Saint Paul’s Catholic High School are discovering the joy of cooking through the school’s vibrant Cooking Club. This initiative teaches essential culinary skills in a fun and friendly environment.

Recognising cooking as a core life skill, the school aims to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn how to prepare nutritious meals, make informed food choices, and enjoy the process of creating something delicious. The club is open to Year 7students, offering them a strong foundation in cookery and a chance to develop confidence, independence, and a lifelong appreciation for good food.

Each session is free of charge, and students take home the meals they prepare—enough to feed a family of four—making the experience both educational and practical.

Mrs Cropper, Senior Assistant Headteacher shared, “Cooking is more than just preparing meals—it’s about empowering students to take control of their health and wellbeing. Learning to shop smartly, prep ingredients, and cook wholesome dishes gives them the tools to make better choices and builds their confidence in and out of the kitchen.”

Mr Merrill, MFL teacher, added, “It’s incredible to see how much the students are learning—not just cooking techniques, but also maths, nutrition, and teamwork. Watching them tackle new recipes with enthusiasm and a ‘can-do’ spirit has been inspiring. ”

Mr Whiteside, Headteacher, emphasised the broader impact: “Research shows that children who are involved in cooking are less fussy eaters, they’re more likely to try new foods, understand where their meals come from, and think about how to reduce waste. These are lessons that last a lifetime.”
