A Week of Celebrating Languages

The Power of Languages – Celebrating Languages Week
Linguistic skills will put to the test when students and staff from Saint Paul’s take part in “Languages Week”, a series of events designed to celebrate the diversity of languages.
A full programme of events around the school will enable pupils to gain access to a palette of language tasters and assemblies related to language learning.
Mrs McCarron, Head of Modern Languages at Saint Paul’s explained: “There is a rich and diverse culture behind all the languages on which we focused, we want to celebrate these cultures and show everyone across the school how important languages are and what fun can be had learning them. As a school, we recognise the value of languages and intercultural relationships and we want to encourage our students  to be able to use more than one language.”
Mrs McCarron  added “We live in a multilingual, multicultural world where only 6% of the world population speaks English as a first language so it is essential, if we are to communicate on a wider scale, that we have some knowledge of other languages and cultures.”
“Learning other languages and valuing other cultures promotes tolerance and understanding at home and abroad,” commented Mr Whiteside, Head Teacher at Saint Paul’s. “In addition to the practical benefit of being able to communicate more successfully with more people, language learning brings cultural and educational advantages which are important to our well being and development.”
The theme for this this year’s celebration of Languages is Languages for Peace and the power of learning a language.
We have launched a competition with Global School Alliance,  ‘The power of learning a language…’
We are asking students to tell us how languages have the power to bring people together, how learning a language empowers them and how languages will open doors for them in the future.
The competition aims to showcase the magic and importance of language learning.
Deadline for entries is 1st October
