At Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, we are passionate about books and this love of reading is shared with all students. There was a real buzz in school at the moment as every student in Year 7 received their brand-new book from Bookbuzz.
Bookbuzz is a reading programme from The Book Trust, which supports schools to encourage reading for pleasure, independent choice and to develop a whole school reading culture.

Mrs Savova, School Librarian, explains “As a school, we work hard to encourage a reading for pleasure culture and promote a love of reading. Choice is central to engaging students with reading and the Bookbuzz offers an excellent selection from which the students can choose.
Bookbuzz provides a really high-quality focus of attractive new books with a great selection of award-winning authors, and really does create a “buzz” about reading because students get their very own book to keep!”
“We are delighted to be taking part in the Bookbuzz programme once again, and our Year 7 students are so excited about choosing their free books,” commented Mr Sharrock, English Teacher and Literacy Coordinator. “At St Paul’s we firmly believe that an ability to read competently is of the utmost importance to a student’s success in all aspects of life. Reading develops cultural capital, allows individuals to participate more fully in the world around them, and equips them with the means to act with agency and independence in their own lives.”

“Reading is a skill that most of us take for granted, yet is one that is essential for being able to get on in life,” added Mr Whiteside, Head Teacher. “As a child grows up, being able to read well not only enables them to discover new facts and to learn at school, but also opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities. As research shows children who read for pleasure will achieve more than those that don’t in later life. All our staff are committed to ensuring that all children become independent and fluent readers during their time at our school. We want our children to enjoy books as much as we do!”
