Celebrating Creativity – Year 7 Explore the Art of African Masks

Year 7 Art students have been delving into the rich artistic, cultural and symbolic traditions of African masks. Their early explorations have taken shape through a series of sketchbook studies, where students experiment with form, colour and expressive mark‑making as they develop ideas towards contemporary‑inspired mask designs.

The project began with an investigation into how masks have been used across various African cultures to convey identity, celebrate community, and tell powerful stories.

Students then explored the work of contemporary artist Kimmy Cantrell, whose bold, expressive ceramic masks reinterpret traditional forms through modern shapes and vibrant colours. This research has been key in helping students shape their own creative responses.

Drawing on both historic and contemporary influences, students have been designing African‑inspired masks that highlight individuality, creativity and a growing understanding of the artistic traditions behind their work. These evolving designs will ultimately lead into the creation of 3D relief masks next half term.

Miss Coyle, Head of Art, reflected on the students’ progress:

“Our Year 7 students approached this project with exceptional enthusiasm and curiosity. Their developing designs are visually striking and demonstrate a deep understanding of cultural art and expressive design. I am incredibly proud of their creativity, skill and willingness to experiment.”
