Debate Mate inter-school competition

We were excited to be the hosting school for the regional round of Debate Mate’s inter-school competitions on Tuesday 23 January!! Around 75 pupils and staff attended from five schools across the North West.

Our two Debate Mate teams participated in two debates each last night and they each won one!

Congratulations to:

Vita
Rugile
Kira
Elvira
Manna
Rio
Enzo
Jasmine

They all performed amazingly.

The competition from Trinity, Burnage Boys, Ellesmere Park and Eden Boys schools was tough so the students did really well on the unseen motions with just 15 minutes to prepare for opposition/proposition roles!

We would also like to thank Kyeron , Adam, Lev, Ashley and Peter for helping to support the teams and look after the guests. They were each a credit to the school.

Students at St Paul’s are enjoying Debate Mate sessions where university students come into school to run extra-curricular debate workshops.

The Debate Mate programmes increase speaking and listening attainment and improve a range of higher-order thinking skills and non-cognitive abilities such as confidence, teamwork, and leadership.

At the same time as focusing on debating skills, the sessions look at raising aspirations and helping students to make informed post-18 choices.

Debate Mate supports the young people of today to find their voices, so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow!
