We are all delighted with the Coding Club which was set up at Saint Paul’s by Year 11 pupil, Alex, who wanted to share his passion for the coding with his fellow pupils.
Many pupils have now enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the popular after-school Coding Club, where they have been creating a 2D Minecraft game.
They have been using the Scratch Programming language to learn many programming concepts, such as variables, lists, conditions, and events as they were creating this game. Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web.
Alex commented: “The Coding Club offers fun and engaging coding sessions for pupils of all abilities. The aim of Coding Club is to develop programming skills and to inspire pupils to consider programming and other digital careers in the future. Scratch is an excellent programme to start learning the basics of coding and understand how each code concept fits together like a puzzle piece.”
Mr Whiteside, Head Teacher commented: “I’m pleased to say that we offer a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and activities here at St. Paul’s. The Coding Club, is completely pupil-led and it’s utterly inspiring to see our young people, such as Alex, who have such passion for and deep understanding of such an intricate and complex subject.
It’s great to see the students having fun but also developing such skills as creativity, insight, problem solving, empathy and teamwork. As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Learning to code is a valuable skill for students to carry with them into higher education and real life. It can instill confidence in technology, foster problem-solving skills, resilience, creativity, and much more.”
