Outdoor Inspiration: Year 10 Students Explore the Goyt Valley

Geography field trips offer unique educational benefits, and with this in mind, Year 10 students from Saint Paul’s recently visited the Goyt Valley in the Peak District as part of their GCSE Geography course.

The fieldwork involved a day of hands-on learning with a representative from the Peak District National Park Authority. Students focused on measuring the flow velocity, depth, and width of the river, as well as examining the shape of rocks at three different sites to understand how a river changes as it flows downstream.

Mrs. Vallelly, Head of Geography, emphasised the importance of such trips: “This is an excellent opportunity for our students to get outdoors and practice their geographical skills in the real world. Fieldwork is essential in connecting classroom teaching with real-world applications. I was delighted to see the group demonstrate an excellent application of their classroom knowledge.”

Mrs. Chisnall, Geography teacher and Year 8 Progress Leader, added: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the field trip, showing a positive attitude towards their research. The students were highly engaged and enjoyed seeing their geography lessons come to life.”

Head Teacher Mr. Whiteside also highlighted the value of field trips: “The world outside the school is richly inspiring, constantly re-energising what takes place within the classroom. A field trip offers students a level of understanding that textbooks or lessons alone cannot equal. It’s an opportunity for creativity and personalised learning, giving students a sense of ownership of their education.”

This trip to the Goyt Valley has undoubtedly enriched the students’ understanding of geography, providing them with practical skills and inspiring them to see the subject in a new light.
