Saint Paul’s Encourage the Joy of Reading

At Saint Paul’s we are keen to promote the importance and joy of reading, and, with this in mind, a group of Year 7 and Year 8 pupils were invited to attend a visit to The Forum Library in Wythenshawe. The trip included a tour of the library, a meeting with the librarian, the gift of a library card and to opportunity to take some books from the library to read at home.

Mrs Irena Savova, Librarian at Saint Paul’s, said: “The aim of the library trip was to further develop an understanding of the pleasure of reading and how it can support learning and to help students in selecting books they will enjoy.”

“The trip was designed to encourage and develop the students’ enjoyment of reading. We are encouraging students to borrow some books from The Forum library and to visit the school library where there are many award-winning books to choose from ranging from chillers and thrillers to war stories, drama and comedy.”

“The trip and its celebration of books and reading was designed to remind students to make reading a priority activity in their lives,” explained Mr Jamie Sharrock, English teacher and Literacy Lead. “We want people to make reading a regular part of their routine . . . whether they’re reading solo or together with their classmates, parents, or friends. The library trip was designed to help students to develop a life-long love of reading. Students can borrow books from either The Forum library or the school library where the titles are carefully chosen to reflect all tastes and abilities. It is very important to instil in young people a need and desire to read. Research shows that teenagers who choose to pick up a book for pleasure are more likely to succeed in life.”
