The Anti‑Racist School: Empowering Students Through Education

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 recently took part in a series of workshops delivered by The Anti‑Racist School, an organisation dedicated to promoting inclusion and challenging discrimination in educational settings.

The sessions were designed to equip the students with the knowledge and confidence to recognise racism, understand how it can appear in everyday situations and challenge it safely and effectively. Through interactive discussions and practical activities, students explored how to have difficult but important conversations about race and learned constructive ways to speak up when they see or hear racist behaviour.

A key focus of the workshops was ensuring that all students feel supported: educating those who may not personally experience racism, while empowering those who do to feel safe, heard and respected in their school environment.

By building this shared understanding, the workshops helped students develop the confidence to address racism when they encounter it and contributed to creating a more inclusive, aware and compassionate school environment.

Natalie from the Anti-Racist School commented: “It was really powerful to see how engaged the students were and how thoughtfully they approached these conversations. Creating space for young people to talk honestly about race and to feel confident challenging racism safely,  is essential to building school environments where everyone feels they belong.”
