Forty of our Year 11 students had the exciting opportunity to attend Poetry Live in Manchester, an event designed to enrich their understanding of the poets and poems featured in the GCSE English Literature anthology. Throughout the day, students watched live performances, heard readings and took part in Q&A sessions with some of the most influential contemporary poets writing today.

The event featured an impressive line-up including Simon Armitage, the current Poet Laureate and one of Britain’s most celebrated poets. Known for his remarkable ear for language, Armitage read from his anthology poems, offering students a rare chance to hear the work directly from its creator.
Students were also treated to one of the most dynamic performances in modern poetry from John Agard, whose energetic delivery, cultural insight and sharp humour captivated the audience. His reflections on history, identity and creativity added further depth to his readings.
Former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, one of the most read and loved poets of the era, shared her sharp, witty and emotionally resonant work. She spoke about the literary influences woven through her poetry, from mythology to Shakespeare, giving students a clearer sense of the context behind her writing.
There were also readings from award‑winning poets Imtiaz Dharker and Daljit Nagra, each bringing their distinctive voice and perspective to the stage. Liz Berry offered an absorbing and beautifully delivered reading, showcasing her lyrical style and ability to connect deeply with audience and place.
The poets responded to student questions, discussing the creative process, the ways in which poems speak to and influence each other, and the ongoing evolution of poetry in the modern world. These conversations provided valuable insight into the craft behind the poems students study.
To further support students preparing for their exams, the event also included sessions led by experienced Chief Examiners. They offered clear, practical guidance on the skills essential for success in GCSE English Literature, including how to approach exam questions, analyse poetry effectively and write with confidence.
