Public speaking and storytelling workshop with Andy Copps

Year 7 and Year 8 students visited The Forum Library in Wythenshawe where they enjoyed taking part in exercises to practise their public speaking skills, and how to tell an engaging story using the power of their voice. The session was led by Andy Copps, a professional storyteller and public speaker.

The workshop centred around storytelling, a powerful means of communicating ideas, and an excellent tool to inspire students’ literacy development, creativity and communication abilities.

Miss Savova, school Librarian, explained: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and were really engaged in the various activities. Andy did a few vocal exercises with them and taught them how to engage their public when speaking in front of an audience. He also asked the students to do a few storytelling activities focused on both listening and speaking and gave them some advice of what to do and what to avoid when publicly speaking.”

“Andy had a resonating bowl with him – this was a great hit among the students!”

“The workshop was designed around interaction and participation:” added Mr Sharrock, English teacher and Literacy Lead. “The techniques Andy used in storytelling will boost creative imagination and confidence in our students, to stand up and talk to a group of people, enhance collaboration and boost self-esteem and well-being. Andy’s enthusiasm and experience were very motivational for our students. The students demonstrated excellent oracy skills and Andy Copps very was impressed with our students’ eloquence!”
